Cult of Personality

A cult of personality is a phenomenon in which an individual or group uses a variety of propaganda techniques, such as patriotism, government-organised rallies and demonstrations, to present the leader as a figurehead who embodies the nation’s values. These approaches can be used to manipulate public opinion and create a false sense of loyalty among citizens.

It is important to remember that celebrities and politicians also utilize these tactics to maintain their popularity and influence. This type of manipulation has been used throughout history in various forms, from Ancient Greece to modern-day dictatorships.

This piece aims to make the viewer think about the techniques of mass media, propaganda, that are used to create an idealized, heroic, and worshipful image of a leader, often through unquestioning flattery and praise.

Despite the fact that Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi is viewed by some as a hero and by others as a villain, his Cult of Personality reigned over Africa’s Libya from a coup d’état in 1969 until his very public death in 2011.

Dictatorship leadership is an authoritarian form of leadership that has been used throughout history to control people and their resources. While this type of leadership can bring about quick results and decisions, it also brings a number of serious drawbacks. The disadvantages of dictatorship leadership clearly outweigh the positives. It can mean an inability to make decisions based on consensus, and a complete lack of accountability. It can also lead to an oppressive atmosphere where regimes limit freedom and human rights.

Nowadays, it’s incredibly easy to share thoughts and opinions on a particular topic or person. However, this can lead to people forgetting all the other elements of reality and agendas that their country may be involved in.

In Cult of Personality, I have used a lacing technique as a visual metaphor to represent cover ups, or veiling of secrets.
