Dudley Moore and Peter Cook

You are looking for a unique and one-of-a-kind painting, aren’t you? The painting of Dudley Moore and Peter Cook by Adrian Reynolds is a perfect example of this. An elegant black-and-white painting of the comedic duo, based on a photo by Jack Mitchell, this portrait art painting is just right for adding humour to any room.

Originally from Torquay, Cook was a middle-class public schoolboy whose father worked as a colonial administrator in Nigeria. Moore, on the other hand, was raised on a council estate in Dagenham. His father was an electrician, and his mother was a typist.

The emergence of two comedy legends began in January 1960, when a producer brought two of the most gifted performers from Oxford and Cambridge universities together for a show at the Edinburgh Festival. A dynamic duo that would forever change the comedy world, both Dudley Moore and Peter Cook became leading figures in the British satire and humor boom of the 1960s.

Both Moore and Cook found mainstream success with shows, recordings, and characters such as:

  • Beyond the Fringe;
  • Not Only… But Also;
  • Pete and Dud;
  • Derek and Clive.

Though Peter Cook wrote sketches and performed comedies, Dudley Moore was also one of the best jazz pianists in the UK.  After launching a successful Hollywood film career, he both appeared in and scored the music for a number of the best old comedy movies.

Both of the comic pioneers who lit up the Sixties battled their own demons and addictions and died far too young. In the end, their close bond proved to be their downfall, as their familiarity with one another enabled them to hurt each other like a married couple.

One of my particular favourites and lesser-known sketches by Peter Cook is a series of calls to an unsuspecting English radio talk show host, Clive Bull, on his late-night show on LBC in London. Over time, Cook created an elaborate story using the pseudonym “Sven from Swiss Cottage,” a Norwegian fisherman who had come to London looking for romance and to escape the fish-obsessed phone-ins of Norway.

This painting is a must-have for any fan of Dudley Moore and Peter Cook, or anyone who just loves old comedy.
