Born in 1938 in Wimbledon, London, Reed was a renowned figure in the film and drama industry, with a career spanning over four decades. Reed claimed to have previously worked as a boxer, bouncer, taxi driver, and hospital porter. In addition to completing his mandatory army service in the Royal Army Medical Corps.

His most famous roles include his portrayal of Proximo in Gladiator and Bill Sikes in Oliver, and dramas such as The Trap, Women in Love.

Oliver Reed was known for his hard-partying lifestyle and drinking habits which often caused him to be involved in many scandals. Reed considered that“You meet a better class of people in pubs. I do not live in the world of sobriety. My only regret is that I didn’t drink every pub dry and sleep with every woman on the planet.”

Despite this, he managed to achieve considerable success throughout his career with appearences in over 100 films. His excellence as an actor was undoubted with performances often highly praised by critics for their intensity and realism.

Oliver Reed lived in the village of Churchtown, Co. Cork, Ireland for the last six years of his life. Sadly, although managing managed to maintain a successful career, Reed passed away in 1999 at the age of 61 due to an alcohol-related heart attack while filming Gladiator in a bar in Malta after challenging sailors to a drinking match. Reed was buried beneath a beech tree at Churchtown Cemetery, not far from his favourite pub, O’Brien’s.

His death shocked many fans all over the world who had grown to love him as an actor throughout his career. His good friend snooker legend Alex Higgins described Reed as a “charismatic friend who enlivened the lives of those he encountered”.
